Brick passages under the walls of Fort Adams, built in the nineteenth century so the garrison could detect anyone trying to approach unseen. The Fort Adams Trust’s guided tour starts on the ramparts above Newport Harbor and goes down into them, by way of the officers’ quarters and the restored and unrestored casemates, about seventy-five minutes from March to December, with private tours through the winter. Ask which ticket includes the tunnels when you book, since the self-guided route has not always gone below ground. A National Historic Landmark inside Fort Adams State Park. PUBLIC, admission charged.
