The same lake beds as the Kemmerer quarries, but this side is federal and protected, and it holds the best of it: complete stingrays, birds, a horse the size of a dog, palm fronds, all from a subtropical lake that sat here for two million years. The visitor centre has spectacular material on the wall and a research quarry you can watch in summer. LOOK ONLY. Collecting anything here is a federal offence.

Look, do not collect

This ground is protected. Photograph it, record it, leave it where it lies. On US federal land the Paleontological Resources Preservation Act 2009 makes collecting vertebrate fossils an offence, and penalties are real.
