The best fossil river in America for sheer variety. You wade gravel bars in a slow Florida river with a sifting screen and come out with black megalodon teeth, mammoth and mastodon enamel, horse and camel teeth, glyptodont scutes and sting-ray barbs. Florida requires a cheap annual Fossil Permit from the Museum of Natural History for vertebrate material, which is unusual and worth knowing before you go. Winter is the season, when the water is low and clear. Watch for gators and check river levels.
