Beyond lapis, the Panjshir Valley of Afghanistan produces emeralds that rival Colombia’s at their best, mined in small hand-driven adits high on the valley walls, often with crude explosives that shatter much of the crop. The trade funded the valley’s long resistance. Afghanistan carries severe travel advisories; Panjshir emerald reaches the world through Peshawar and the international trade.
