Out on the old bed of Lake Bonneville west of the Dugway range, geodes lie buried in the lakebed ash, hollow and lined with quartz: clear rock crystal, purple amethyst, sometimes pink. The BLM tells you how to find them and the advice is worth taking. They sit below the surface rather than on it, they run two to four inches across, they are dark grey and round and hard, and the best digging is where somebody has already dug, in the soft grey ground that underlies the area. It is a long drive across the West Desert to get there. Bring everything, including all your water and all your fuel: this is one of the emptiest quarters of the Lower 48 and there is nothing out there at all. PUBLIC (BLM), Juab County.
