Taiwan had a jade boom: the Fengtian mine near Hualien made the island one of the world’s largest nephrite producers in the 1960s and 70s, and Taiwan jade, often with the cat’s-eye chatoyancy, is still cut and sold. This pin sits at Jinguashi in the north, the old gold and copper mountain above the sea, where the Gold Museum sets out a 220-kilogram pure gold brick and dares you to pick it up with one thumb and one finger. It closes on the first Monday of each month and on Chinese New Year’s Eve and Day. PUBLIC museum, Jinguashi/Jiufen.
