Flint Ridge

Flint (Ohio state gem)
Flint Ridge
Nyttend · Public domain · source

Ohio’s state gemstone is flint, and this ridge east of Newark is where the finest in the East comes from, a rainbow-banded flint that Native peoples quarried in hundreds of pits for 12,000 years and traded clear across the continent. Knappers still prize it. It is a state memorial and nature preserve now: you can walk among the ancient quarry pits, but collecting inside is restricted, so buy the knapped material from the local dealers.
