High in the Talkeetna Mountains above Palmer, the Independence Mine was one of Alaska’s great hardrock gold producers, and its weathered bunkhouses and mill stand preserved as a state historical park you can walk through at 3,000 feet in the alpine. The whole Hatcher Pass area is old gold country, laced with quartz veins and recreational claims, with trails running out over open tundra above the treeline. PUBLIC state historical park, near Palmer.
