Colorado’s state gem comes off the roof of the state. Mount Antero and neighbouring White Mountain hold gem aquamarine in pockets above 13,000 feet, some of the highest-altitude gem mining on Earth, worked in a short, dangerous summer window when the peaks are clear of snow and lightning. This is serious mountaineering to serious ground; most people admire Colorado aquamarine in the shops and museums in Buena Vista and Salida rather than climb for it. Chaffee County.
