Oklahoma’s state rock is the rose rock, clusters of bladed barite crystals that grow in the red Permian sandstone into shapes exactly like blooming roses, stained red by the iron in the rock. The band around Noble and the Arbuckle country is the classic ground; they weather out of road cuts and hillsides. Some collecting is on PRIVATE land (ask), and there is a small rose-rock museum at Noble. A genuinely strange and beautiful thing the ground makes on its own.
