A serpentine barren northwest of Baltimore that once supplied much of the world’s chromium, mined here from the 1810s. Now a Natural Environment Area of rare grassland and old prospect pits; collecting is restricted on the protected ground, so read the rules, but the geology and the mining history are extraordinary.
