Swedish Kiruna iron

The largest underground iron mine on Earth, inside a mountain of nearly pure magnetite above the Arctic Circle in Swedish Lapland. It is so vast, and undermines so much ground, that the whole city of Kiruna is being physically moved, building by building, a few kilometres east to keep it from collapsing into the workings. Tours leave the tourist centre in town all year round and go down to LKAB’s visitor centre on the 540-metre level. Places are limited, so book ahead, and children must be at least six. PUBLIC tours by booking.
