In 1882 Eliza Kimberly began collecting strange heavy rocks on her family’s land near Brenham, in Kiowa County, and the scientists and meteorite hunters who followed her have taken more than three tons of the same broken meteorite out of these fields since. It is a pallasite, a stony-iron: cut and polished, the metal holds yellow-green olivine crystals like stained glass. In 2005 a specially built metal detector found a 1,400-pound oriented piece, its leading face sculpted into a cone on the way down; only two larger of its kind are known anywhere. The fields are PRIVATE farmland, so ask before you walk them.
