The chalk and marl of eastern Mississippi hold the bones of an ancient sea: the state fossil is Basilosaurus, a sixty-foot serpent-shaped early whale that swam here when Mississippi was seafloor. The creeks and cuts of the black-belt prairie give up its vertebrae along with shark teeth, sea urchins and ammonites. Get permission for private land and know the rules on vertebrate fossils.
