The Jos Plateau in Nigeria was one of the world’s great tin fields, worked by local people long before the British industrialised it in the 1900s, and it also produced columbite, a key niobium ore. The mining left thousands of ponds pocking the plateau. Small-scale digging continues today. Historic and ACTIVE informal ground; the Jos museum tells the story.
