The limestone quarries above Byblos at Hjoula, Haqel and Nammoura hold one of the finest fossil-fish deposits on Earth, 95-million-year-old fish, shrimp, octopus and sharks preserved in exquisite detail in fine Cretaceous lagoon mud. They have been collected since antiquity and were known to medieval scholars. Small family quarries sell prepared plates; export rules apply.
