North of Grand Marais the basalt gives up thomsonite, a zeolite that forms in pink, green and cream concentric eyes, cut and polished into cabochons found essentially nowhere else in America in this quality. The classic ground is a short stretch of shore that has been picked for over a century. Much of the best beach is PRIVATE and has been for generations; ask locally, buy from the North Shore lapidaries, and work the public cobble beaches for what the lake turns over each season.
