A hillside in the Cascade foothills near Mount Vernon where you dig your own thundereggs and geodes out of the clay, some hollow and lined with quartz. It is on Washington Department of Natural Resources land set aside for exactly this: no dig fee and no collecting permit, which is rare. It is not free to park, though. A Discover Pass is a motor vehicle permit and you need one to leave a car on DNR recreation land, ten dollars for the day or forty-five for the year, so display it or expect a ticket. Walking or cycling in needs nothing. Bring a shovel, a pry bar and patience; the good pockets are down in the blue clay. PUBLIC (DNR rockhounding site, Discover Pass to park), Skagit County.
