A plain marble slab carved with one word, ALICE, in the churchyard of All Saints at Pawleys Island. In the mid-1800s Alice Flagg was secretly engaged to a man her brother, Dr. Allard Flagg of the Hermitage at Murrells Inlet, thought beneath her. She fell ill, and when he found the ring on a ribbon around her neck he tore it away. She is said to walk at the Hermitage and here, hand on her chest, searching for it, and visitors circle the grave and leave rings. The historian Catherine Lewis found records suggesting the slab is a memorial and that Alice may not lie under it at all. A working parish churchyard: walk quietly and leave the gifts where they lie. PUBLIC.
