In the Guyanese jungle in November 1978, more than 900 members of the Peoples Temple died in a mass murder-suicide ordered by Jim Jones, a third of them children. It was, until 2001, the largest single loss of American civilian life in a deliberate act. The clearing has been almost entirely reclaimed by forest and there is little to see. Included because it is real history that should not be tidied away, and it is a grave, not an attraction.
