A stone cairn in the woods behind the Cumberland library, over the place where nine colonists captured in Pierce’s Fight on 26 March 1676 were tortured and killed during King Philip’s War. Cistercian monks who lived here rebuilt it in 1928 from the stones of an older cairn, the state later added a pillar and plaque, and it is believed to be the oldest veterans’ memorial in the country. People report a phantom horse in the trees, cries, and a girl’s voice by the stones; in 2014 the Ghost Hunters crew said their meters jumped as the nine names were read, and other investigators found nothing. The path is unsigned, so get the trail map from the library first. PUBLIC, Monastery Park.
