Beneath a monastery in Sicily stand roughly eight thousand mummified dead, not lying but STANDING in their own clothes along the corridors, hung on the walls in rows by profession: monks, lawyers, soldiers, children. Palermo families paid to keep relatives on display and visited them. The last, two-year-old Rosalia Lombardo, embalmed in 1920, is so well preserved she appears asleep. Sobering rather than fun.
