Built between 1910 and 1912 on the main street of a North-West Mounted Police town, opened as a house for vaudeville and moving pictures, and never stopped: it is the oldest continually operating theatre in western Canada and an Alberta Historic Resource. The two-storey brick building still has its original balcony, seating, dressing rooms and projection booth, which is rarer than the ghost. The stories started circulating in the early 1960s. Staff and audiences have reported laughter with nobody there, doors slamming, repetitive thumping from inside an unused store room, and a male figure in the bathrooms; the theatre attributes all of it to a dead caretaker they call Ed, said to have been a janitor here in the 1930s, and he is blamed for the smell of tobacco turning up out of nowhere and for lunches going missing during summer camps. A working non-profit theatre: the surest way in is to buy a ticket to whatever is on.
