The Wabasha Street Caves

Wabasha Street, St. Paul (Minnesota)

These are not natural caves but mines, dug into the St. Paul sandstone for silica, then used to grow mushrooms, then turned into a nightclub in the 1930s, when St. Paul had an open arrangement with visiting gangsters and men like Dillinger and Ma Barker drank here. There was a shooting in the caves that the city preferred to forget. Today it is swing dancing, tours and a bar in the same rooms. PUBLIC, downtown St. Paul.
