Maligne Canyon

A river that disappears underground and comes back out cutting a two-metre slot

A slot in the limestone over 50 metres deep and, in places, about two metres wide, cut into the Palliser Formation by a river that mostly is not there. The Maligne runs as a full-sized river for about 15 kilometres upstream and then vanishes: near Medicine Lake it becomes a losing stream and goes down into seeps in the ground. What comes out at the canyon is that water again, joined by large underground streams that amplify the flow, which is why this gorge is being cut so hard and so narrow. It is textbook karst, and in winter the whole thing freezes and guided parties walk up the bottom of it under the bridges.
