Frontier legend on a real, named cliff

In 1758 the ranger Robert Rogers, chased to the top of this steep rock above Lake George by a war party, is said to have thrown his pack over, reversed his snowshoes to leave tracks that walked backward, and slipped away along the ridge. His pursuers, seeing prints that stopped at the cliff edge and a man far below on the frozen lake, believed he had leapt off and lived. The bare rock still carries his name.
