The woman and child turned to stone
The stone the reservation is named for: a rock the Dakota and Lakota describe as a woman and her child turned to stone. It sat on the prairie, was moved to a pedestal at Fort Yates, and remains an object of respect rather than curiosity. Treat it as what it is to the people whose land this is.
