Prehistoric art proving the Sahara was once green and full of water

In the middle of the Sahara, on a sandstone plateau in southeastern Algeria, are fifteen thousand engravings and paintings up to twelve thousand years old, showing hippos, crocodiles, herds of cattle and swimming figures, in country that is now one of the driest places on Earth. They are the record of a green Sahara, before the monsoon shifted. A UNESCO World Heritage site, and one of the greatest galleries of prehistoric art anywhere. Access needs permits and guides.
