A real barren circle wrapped in three centuries of folklore

A perfect barren circle about forty feet across in the Chatham County woods where, the story goes, nothing has grown for centuries because the Devil paces it at night laying his plans. Things left in the ring are said to be flung out by morning. Soil tests find it salty and sterile, and the woods around it grow fine. Real bare ground and a real old story, down a dirt road south of Siler City.
