Documented outlaw history; the buried loot is the lore

For decades before the Civil War the Loomis family ran the biggest horse-and-cattle-thieving ring in central New York out of a farm on the edge of Nine Mile Swamp, buying off sheriffs and juries as they went. When vigilantes finally broke them, the family fortune, said to be gold and stolen goods, was never accounted for, and the swamp has been searched for it ever since.
