Gold Lake rush of 1850 (California folklore)
In 1850 Thomas Stoddard swore he had found a high mountain lake with its shore littered in gold nuggets, then could never lead anyone back to it. His story set off the Gold Lake rush, thousands combed the Lakes Basin of Sierra and Plumas counties, and no lake of gold was ever found.
