The Star Mine Suspension Bridge

A 117 metre swinging footbridge the coal miners crossed to work

A footbridge 117 metres across the Red Deer River at Rosedale, put up in 1931 so the men working the Star Mine could get to the other side. Before it they crossed on a cable car, which is the kind of detail that tells you what the job was worth. The mine is long gone. The province rebuilt the bridge in 1958 and still maintains it, deliberately, to mark the mining history of this valley, and it is the only reason most people ever set foot on the far bank. It was shut for nearly four years while the northeast support was dealt with and reopened in January 2024. It moves underfoot, which everybody finds funnier from the middle than from the end.
