Canyon Creek Ice Cave

Canyon Creek Ice Cave

A limestone cave on the flank of Moose Mountain that holds ice all year, also called the Bragg Creek or Moose Mountain ice cave. Water widened the fractures in the rock and then freeze-and-thaw frost wedging tore the entrance wide open; much of the cave beyond is sealed by permanent ice, and in winter there are ice formations near the mouth. People used to drive almost to it, and that is exactly why they no longer can: so many arrived with no light, no helmet and no idea that the road to the old parking lot was closed permanently. THIS PIN IS THE TRAILHEAD, at the lot signed Ing’s Mine off Highway 66, because that is where your day starts. From here it is a seven kilometre walk up the old road before the climb, which makes it about six hours return for a fit hiker and eight for somebody who is not. The rock is loose throughout and somebody has already been killed on the approach slopes by rock knocked down from above. Helmet, light, spare light, and take your rubbish and your spray paint home: both have done real damage here.
