The 1988 track, where the Jamaican bobsleigh team made its debut
The hill on the west edge of Calgary with the ski jumps on it was the main venue of the 1988 Winter Olympics: bobsleigh and luge on the track, plus Nordic combined, ski jumping and the freestyle events, aerials and ballet, when ballet was still a thing. This is the track the Jamaican bobsleigh team made its Olympic debut on, in the four-man event, and the reason a large part of the world knows Calgary at all. The ski jumps were decommissioned in 2018, though the 90 metre tower still stands and people zipline off it. The rest of it is a working sports hill: downhill and snowboarding in winter, mountain-bike trails in summer, indoor rinks, and Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame, which opened here on 1 July 2011. Stand at the bottom of the jump tower and look up the inrun, and the sport stops being abstract.
