A railroad tunnel bored into Stumphouse Mountain by Irish crews in the 1850s, for a Blue Ridge line meant to carry Charleston’s trade through to Tennessee. The state had spent over a million dollars on it by 1859 and would spend no more, and the bore stopped at 1,617 feet of a planned 5,863. It holds near 50 degrees and 85 percent humidity all year, and Clemson University cured blue cheese in it from the 1950s. Bring a real light and shoes for mud. Issaqueena Falls is a quarter-mile walk from the same lot. The City of Walhalla runs the park, five dollars a car, dawn to dusk. PUBLIC, Oconee County.
