Belarus sits on one of the largest potash basins on Earth, and the mines at Salihorsk have raised so much waste that the flat Belarusian countryside now has pale artificial mountains hundreds of metres high, visible for miles and climbable. Underground, the workings run a kilometre down through pink and orange banded salt. The country is a top-three global fertiliser exporter on this rock alone. ACTIVE industrial mining.
