The Timok belt of eastern Serbia is one of Europe’s richest copper-gold provinces, and the Bor and Majdanpek mines produce fine specimens of native copper, chalcopyrite and pyrite alongside the ore. Serbia is also one of the very few places outside the US producing jadarite, a lithium-boron mineral found in 2004 whose chemical formula turned out to be almost exactly that of fictional kryptonite, which the discovering scientists cheerfully pointed out.
