Rome’s greatest gold conquest, in the best-preserved Roman mine on Earth
When Trajan conquered Dacia in AD 106 he took a hoard of gold so vast that ancient sources put it in the hundreds of tonnes, and it funded a hundred and twenty days of games in Rome. It came from the Apuseni Mountains of what is now Romania, where the Romans drove galleries at Rosia Montana, the best-preserved Roman gold mine in the world and still fought over by modern mining proposals. The Dacian gold bracelets looted from Sarmizegetusa and recovered in the 2000s are extraordinary.
