British Columbia was built on two gold rushes. The Fraser Canyon rush of 1858 brought thirty thousand miners north; the Cariboo rush that followed reached the fabulously rich creeks around Barkerville, where the gravel of Williams Creek paid out fortunes. Both the Fraser and the Cariboo creeks are still open to recreational panning in many stretches (know the rules and the claims), and the gold is real, coarse and keepable.
