On Pollepel Island in the Hudson stands the ruin of a Scottish-style castle built by Francis Bannerman, an arms dealer, as a fireworks-and-munitions warehouse from 1901. An explosion, a fire and a slow collapse have left a jagged fairy-tale shell on its island, reached now by tour boat. Rivermen called the island haunted long before the castle ever rose.
