A sprawling state institution for the disabled that opened at Thiells, New York in 1911, grew into a small city, and became a byword for overcrowding and neglect before it closed in 1996. Dozens of its buildings still stand abandoned behind the trees, and a field of numbered, nameless grave markers sits nearby. A hard, real place; much of it is posted and patrolled.
