The largest earthwork fort of the Confederacy, guarding the last open port at Wilmington until a massive Union assault took it in January 1865. Its most-reported ghost is Colonel William Lamb, who built it and is said still to walk the mounds, along with the Gray Man who is seen before storms. A state historic site on the Cape Fear coast, with the ocean slowly eating the ramparts.
