Diana of the Dunes

A real woman turned into a legend by newspapers while she was still alive

In 1915 a Chicago newspaper found a woman living alone in an abandoned shack in the Indiana Dunes, swimming in Lake Michigan and reading Greek. She was Alice Mabel Gray, a university-educated astronomer’s assistant who had walked away from the city. The papers made her a mystic hermit and named her Diana of the Dunes, and crowds came to gawk. Her real life ended badly, in poverty and probable domestic violence, in 1925. People still report a woman swimming alone at dusk. The dunes she defended became a national park in 2019, largely because of the movement she helped inspire.
