Four decades of a city rebuilt at full size, with a steam train between them

A hundred and fifty-eight acres of Edmonton’s river valley rebuilt as four different decades, and the largest living history museum in the country by area. You walk in through the 1846 fur trade fort, come out onto 1885 Street as the settlement arrives, then 1905 Street as it becomes a city, then 1920 Street with the streetcars running. The Indigenous Peoples Experience, which opened in 2021, was built with more than fifty local First Nations and Métis historians, elders and educators and tells the part that the forts on their own never did. A steam train has been carrying people from the gate down to the fort since 1977, and the streetcar and the train come with admission. Costumed interpreters work the streets from the May long weekend to Labour Day and on Sundays in September.
