The 134th dry hole came in, and Alberta stopped being a farm province
On 13 February 1947 an Imperial Oil wildcat on Mike Turta’s farm, about 15 kilometres west of Leduc, came in. It was the 134th hole the company had drilled without success, and it found the Devonian reef play that runs under this province. Canada had been importing about 90 per cent of its oil in 1946; within a decade it was producing 65 per cent of its own while consumption tripled, and Alberta stopped being a farming economy. The derrick stands at the Canadian Energy Museum on the site, which has been a National Historic Site since 1990.
