Beachrock in 18 feet of water, sold as Atlantis since 1968
A line of limestone blocks 0.8 km long in 5.5 metres of water off North Bimini, running northeast to southwest, with blocks two to four metres across and rounded corners. It surfaced in 1968 and was immediately attached to Edgar Cayce’s prediction that Atlantis would reappear near Bimini that year. What it actually is: beachrock, carbonate-cemented shell fragments of a kind native to the Bahamas, fractured along orthogonal joints. University of Miami radiocarbon work in 1978 and 1979 put the rock at about 2,800 radiocarbon years, with the shells accumulating around 3,500 years ago before cementing. Eugene Shinn of the USGS and the Miami team agree it is natural. It is also a genuinely pleasant shallow dive with a story attached, and it is 20 minutes from the beach.
