Classic American folklore, told as exactly that
For nearly three hundred years the Pine Barrens of southern New Jersey have carried the story of the Leeds Devil, a winged, hoofed creature said to have been the cursed thirteenth child of Mother Leeds, born in 1735 and flown up the chimney. Sightings peaked in a week of hysteria in January 1909 that closed mills and schools across the Delaware Valley. The Pine Barrens are real, vast and easy to get lost in; the devil is the folklore that guards them.
