A classic Wyoming lost-mine legend that seeded real stampedes

A Wyoming lost-gold legend from the 1860s: a party of prospectors struck fabulous gold at a cabin somewhere in the Big Horn or Wind River country, but Native attacks killed all but one or two, who escaped and could never lead anyone back. The tale seeded real stampedes and even a town name (Lost Cabin). Like all such legends the gold is unproven; the country it haunts, the Big Horns and the Wind Rivers, is real, high and beautiful. Told as folklore.
