Documented history; the unrecovered gold is the great Southern treasure hunt
When the Confederacy fell in the spring of 1865 its treasury, gold and silver coin worth a fortune, went south by wagon with the fleeing government and simply came apart. Part of it was robbed at the Chennault crossroads in Lincoln County one night in May; part was paid out, buried and stolen along the way; a good deal was never accounted for at all. The hunt for the vanished Confederate gold has run across Georgia and the Carolinas ever since.
