A pass through the Green Mountains with cliffs climbing nearly a thousand feet on both sides, and a floor of fallen rock with caves to crawl into; the state parks list cave exploring, bouldering and ice climbing among the things to do here. After Jefferson’s Embargo Act of 1807 cut off trade with Canada, northern Vermonters kept herding cattle and hauling goods through the notch toward Montreal, and later people escaping slavery came this way to Canada. The road over the top closes for the winter. Bring a headlamp and expect to scramble. PUBLIC, the state park sits at the foot of the notch on Route 108.
